茶道修行のこと　

On Training in Teaism

 

　本来、茶道に拘わらず全ての道において初伝であるとか奥伝であるとかという違いはあるものではない。

​

然るに中伝、奥伝、皆伝等の区別を以って伝授せしめんとするは、ただ真実を伝えんとする方便の故を以ってである。

​

奥伝のこと、といっても殊更のものではないのであるが、

 

初門の者にあっては修業の浅い故に、取り違え勘違いを起こすことが古来より多しとされ、その本質を見失う事を恐れるのである。

​

富士の峰の上が尊いか、下が尊いかを言うことはできないが頂きの秀麗なる姿をもって人はこれを富士とみる。

​

正しく道を志す者の頂きへ導かんのするのが伝授する者の役割であるとすれば、奥伝を以って頂きを指し示すのは方便の至極である

 

と言える。

初伝まではいわば義務教育の部分で、中伝は高等学校、奥伝は大学で、皆伝は大学院のようなものである。

​

但し、当流は風炉を主とした薄茶点前の流儀なのであるから「初伝」「中伝」「奥伝」とはいっても学ぶ事は同じである。

​

腕前に応じて（磨きのかかり具合によって）三段階に分けたにすぎない。

 

当流の元々の考え方は濃茶は好ましくない。薄茶点前を中心とする。その薄茶点前も風炉を主として行う。

 

現代は炉を切ってある住宅は殆どないからである。

​

免許取得者は以上の主旨にのっとった当流の茶道をマスターした事になる。

In its original sense, not only in the Teaism but in all paths, there is no inherent distinction such as shoden (初伝initial transmission) or okuden (奥伝inner transmission).

 

Nevertheless, distinctions such as chuden(中伝), okuden, and kaiden are established and transmitted solely as expedient means in order to convey the truth accurately.

 

What is called okuden is not something extraordinary in itself. However, those at the initial stage of training, due to the shallowness of their practice, have from ancient times often been prone to misunderstanding or confusion, and there is concern that they may lose sight of the essence.

 

One cannot say whether the summit of Mount Fuji (富士山) is more precious than its base, yet it is by the beautiful form of its peak that people recognize it as Mount Fuji.

 

If the role of the one who transmits the teaching is to guide those who sincerely aspire to the Way toward the summit, then pointing out that summit through okuden may be said to be the ultimate expedient means.

 

Up to shoden may be likened to compulsory education, chuden to high school, okuden to university, and kaiden to graduate school.

 

However, since our school is a style of usucha temae centered on the furo, even though we speak of “shoden,” “chuden,” and “okuden,” what is learned is essentially the same.

 

They are merely divided into three stages according to one's level of skill—that is, the degree to which one's practice has been refined.

 

From the outset, our school's fundamental view is that koicha(濃茶) is not favored. We focus on usucha temae(薄茶点前), and that usucha practice is conducted primarily with the furo(風呂).

 

This is because in modern times, very few homes are built with a sunken hearth (ro炉).

 

Those who have obtained a license are regarded as having mastered the Teaism of our school in accordance with the principles outlined above.
